Compartiendo Historia, Revitalizando Calle Dos Cinco “Fiesta De Las Americas”

Fiestas de las Américas se mantiene como una tradición de Capitol Hill por más de 12 años. Celebra la cultura, comida, música, y gente hispana. El evento se llevará a cabo el 30 de Septiembre, empezando con el Desfile de las Américas a las 10 a.m.
El plan de revitalizar el área de SW 25th St. ha sido trabajado por un buen tiempo, y con adiciones y mejoras nuevas, es solo el comienzo.
Directora de Calle Dos Cinco Donna Cervantes está planeando y organizando con los miembros de la comunidad de Capitol Hill, y dijo que la Fiesta es una celebración de varias formas.
“Esta va ser nuestro 12o Fiesta de las Américas la cual cae en el mes del patrimonio hispano,” ella dijo. “Es para demostrar la diversidad, la gente multicultural que están aquí en Oklahoma. Es para mostrar su patrimonio a través de su ropa, a través de su baile, a través de su música.”
Cervantes está trabajando con la organización Calle Dos Cinco por más de cinco años, y dijo que ha sido emocionante ver los cambios a su alrededor durante su tiempo en Capitol Hill.
“Yo se que hay gente que ha estado trabajando aquí por muchos años. Revitalización es la meta,” ella dijo. “Es un área que tiene mucha historia. Mucha gente ha trabajado por mucho tiempo con mucha fuerza para reconstruirlo en un área de comercio como la fue en los 40s y 50s.”
Hay mucha gente con memorias amadas del área, incluyendo al Presidente de Oklahoma City Community College Jerry Steward, quien servira como gran mariscal de las Fiestas. Compartió su historia con el área en la ceremonia de dedicación del centro de OCCC Capitol Hill.
“Como un joven que vivía más o menos a dos millas hacia el oeste, desde los diez años comencé a caminar esas dos millas los sábados en la tarde, y veía las ventanas e iba al cine,” él dijo. “Fue un lugar encantador.”
Organizaciones como Calle Dos Cinco quieren volver a traer el encanto con eventos y planes que darán beneficio comercial y económico al área a largo plazo.
“Nuestra meta es reconstruir eso. Tener una comunidad que sirve al vecindario y atrae visitantes de todas partes,” Cervantes dijo. “Es una comunidad predominadamente hispana, y hay restaurantes y tiendas que promocionan las comidas y cultura hispana la cual es única para Oklahoma, entonces los festivales y eventos que organizamos lo promocionan igualmente. Hace destacar la cultura hispana y la belleza que está aquí.”
Casi el 75 por ciento de la población de Capitol Hill es hispana, y el área demuestra una mayoría de comunidad y negocio hispano. Cervantes dijo que sabe de la importancia de comunidad, especialmente con el clima político.
“Es difícil cuando muchas personas de la comunidad estan bajo el estrés de la incertidumbre, y tal vez no sentirse bienvenidos de algunas formas,” ella dijo. “No podria ser mas lejos de la verdad. El propósito del evento es construir comunidad, para mostrar las contribuciones de los residentes aquí, y mostrar la belleza de la cultura.”
Cervantes dijo que entiende el valor de la gente en su comunidad, y planea mejoras en Capitol Hill a través de comunicacion y representacion.
“Que riqueza trae a nosotros de Oklahoma y Estadounidenses. Queremos demostrar la diversidad e invitar a gente de todas partes para venir a ver, probar y vivirlo. Es lo que lo hace grandioso vivir aquí,” ella dijo. “Tenemos esperanza que sea una parte del éxito que es a largo plazo. Vale la pena, y la estamos viendo mejorar.”
Fiestas de las Américas empieza el 30 de Septiembre a las 10 a.m. con el desfile y el evento dura todo el dia hasta las 8 p.m. con conciertos y comida.

Celebrating History, Revitalizing Calle Dos Cinco

Oklahoma City.-Fiestas de las Américas has been a running tradition for the Capitol Hill area for twelve years. It has been a celebration of hispanic culture, food, music and people. The event will be held on September 30, starting with the “Parade of the Americas” at 10 a.m.
The plan to revitalize the SW 25th St. strip has been in the works for some time, and with new additions and improvements to come, it is only the beginning.
Calle Dos Cinco Director Donna Cervantes has been planning and organizing with the many Capitol Hill community members, and said the Fiesta a celebration in many forms.
“This will be our twelfth year for Fiestas de las americas which falls during hispanic heritage month,” she said. “It really is to highlight the diversity, the multicultural people who are here in Oklahoma. It’s to show off their heritage through their costumes, through their dance, through their music.”
Cervantes has worked with the Calle Dos Cinco organization for five years, and said that it has been exciting to see the changes around her during her time at Capitol Hill.
“I know there’s people that have been working here for many years. Revitalization is the goal,” she said. “It’s an area that has a lot of history. Lots of people have worked long and hard to try to rebuild it into a strong retail area that it once was in the 40s and 50s. It was a main street for South Oklahoma City and a lot of people have fond memories coming here.”
People have fond memories of the area, including Oklahoma City Community College President Jerry Steward, who will be serving as parade grand marshal for the Fiestas. He shared his history with the area at the dedication ceremony of the new OCCC Capitol Hill Center.
“As a young boy who lived about two miles west, starting about age ten I would walk those two miles on Saturday afternoons, and I’d look at the windows and go to the movies,” he said. “It was a delightful place to be.”
Organizations like Calle Dos Cinco want to bring that delight back with events and plans that will make the area commercially and economically fruitful in the long term.
“Our goal is to rebuild that. Have a community that serves the neighborhood and attracts visitors from all over,” Cervantes said. “It’s a predominantly hispanic community, and there are restaurants and shops that promote the hispanic foods and culture that is unique for Oklahoma, so the festivals and events we host promote that as well. It highlights the culture of the hispanic peoples and the beauty that’s here.”
Almost 75 percent of the population in the Capitol Hill area are hispanic, and the area shows a majority of hispanic business and community. Cervantes said she knows of the importance of community, especially with the political climate.
“It’s difficult when many in our community under the stress of uncertainty, and maybe unwelcome in some ways,” she said. “That couldn’t be farther from the truth. The purpose of the event really is to build community, to show the contributions of the residents here, and the beauty of the culture.”
Cervantes said she understands the value of the people in her community, and plans on improving Capitol Hill through outreach and advocacy.
“What a richness it brings to who we are as Oklahomans and as citizens. We want to showcase the diversity and invite people from all over to come and visit and see, and taste and experience. That’s what makes it great to live here,” she said. “We hope that it’s part of the success that is long term. It’s worth it, we see it turning around.”
Fiestas de las Americas begins on September 30 at 10 a.m. with the parade and goes on all day until 8 p.m. with concerts and food.
