Celebra su nuevo hogar de Hábitat For Humanity

Oklahoma City .- Cruz M.B., empleado del Servicio Postal de los Estados Unidos, celebró la dedicación de su nueva vivienda, eficiente energéticamente y asequible, junto con Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, acompañado por clérigos locales, miembros de la comunidad y medios de comunicación.

Originario de Puerto Rico, Cruz se mudó a Oklahoma en 2013 para construir una vida mejor. Todavía tiene familia en Puerto Rico y recientemente visitó a su hija y a sus dos nietos, que viven en Pensilvania. Dijo que se sorprendió y conmovió por la oleada de apoyo de los miembros de la comunidad que asistieron a la inauguración de su casa en Habitat.

"Es una gran emoción para mí", dijo Cruz. "Me sentí abrumado al ver a tanta gente en mi casa — en mi propia casa."

A través del programa de Construcción de Nuevas Viviendas de Habitat, Cruz completó 100 horas de esfuerzo personal, ayudando a construir su casa y otras junto a voluntarios y personal de Habitat. También cumplió los requisitos para una hipoteca asequible y completó las asignaturas obligatorias de educación para propietarios.

"Soy camionero del Servicio Postal", dijo. "Es mucha responsabilidad. Es un buen trabajo. Pago mis facturas."

La casa de Cruz es una de las tres construidas en terrenos donados hace varios años por la Iglesia Luterana de Nuestro Señor en The Village, lo que pone de manifiesto el papel de las alianzas comunitarias para hacer posible la propiedad asequible. El proyecto también incluyó mejoras en infraestructuras para abordar preocupaciones previas de inundaciones, como un estanque de detención financiado con donaciones de Johnson & Associates y sus empleados.

Durante la ceremonia, la miembro de la junta de Habitat, Amanda Kirkpatrick-Lawler, dirigió una letanía, seguida de una bendición del pastor Steve Evans de la Iglesia Luterana de Nuestro Señor. El diácono John Teague de la Iglesia Católica de San Juan Nepomuceno ofreció entonces una segunda bendición.

Cruz también recibió una colcha hecha a mano por Hands of Mercy Quilters de la Iglesia Luterana de Nuestro Señor, un ministerio que ha creado colchas para personas necesitadas durante más de dos décadas. La colcha fue realizada por Karlene Grosz y presentada por Karen Foran.

"Formar parte de Habitat ha sido tan bueno", dijo Cruz. "Lo hicieron todo fácil y directo. Ha sido una experiencia realmente buena. 

"Simplemente parece otra familia. La familia que tengo lejos está aquí con Hábitat para la Humanidad."

Postal Worker Celebrates New Central Oklahoma Habitat Home

Oklahoma City .- Cruz M.B., a United States Postal Service employee, celebrated the dedication of his new, energy-efficient and affordable home with Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, joined by local clergy, community members and media.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Cruz moved to Oklahoma in 2013 to build a better life. He still has family in Puerto Rico and recently visited his daughter and two grandchildren, who live in Pennsylvania. He said he was surprised and touched by the outpouring of support from community members who attended his Habitat home dedication.

“It’s a big emotion for me,” Cruz said. “I was overwhelmed to see so many people at my home — my own home.”

Through Habitat’s New Home Construction program, Cruz completed 100 hours of sweat equity, helping build his home and others alongside volunteers and Habitat staff. He also qualified for and is paying an affordable mortgage and completed required homeowner education classes.

“I’m a truck driver for the Postal Service,” he said. “It’s a lot of responsibility. It’s a good job. I pay my bills.”

Cruz’s home is one of three built on land donated several years ago by Our Lord’s Lutheran Church in The Village, highlighting the role of community partnerships in making affordable homeownership possible. The project also included infrastructure improvements to address prior flooding concerns, including a detention pond funded with donations from Johnson & Associates and their employees.

During the ceremony, Habitat board member Amanda Kirkpatrick-Lawler led a litany, followed by a blessing from Pastor Steve Evans of Our Lord’s Lutheran Church. Deacon John Teague of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church then offered a second blessing.

Cruz was also presented with a handmade quilt by Our Lord’s Lutheran Church’s Hands of Mercy Quilters, a ministry that has created quilts for those in need for more than two decades. The quilt was made by Karlene Grosz and presented by Karen Foran.

“Being part of Habitat has been so good,” Cruz said. “They made everything easy and straightforward. It’s been a really good experience. 

“It just feels like another family. The family I have far away is here with Habitat for Humanity.”
