Breaking the Cycle: Young Father Gives His Family a Permanent Home
OKLAHOMA CITY — For Kevin S., homeownership means more than a new address. It means giving his 4-year-old son, Lafayette, the stability he rarely experienced growing up. On Thursday, Kevin, his longtime partner Jennifer A. and their son celebrated the dedication of their new Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity home — a milestone Kevin says will help break a cycle of frequent moves and uncertainty.
At 4, Lafayette S. loves pre-K at Piedmont Early Childhood Center, building with LEGO bricks and learning about weather, tornadoes and other natural disasters. His father, Kevin S., already imagines him becoming a television meteorologist. “He will outsmart me one day,” Kevin said. “That’s the plan. That’s the goal.”
A Childhood Marked by Moving
Born in Texas, Kevin moved to Oklahoma City at 12 and now says, “In my heart, I’m an Okie.” As the oldest of five children, he remembers his family moving almost every year—from rental houses and apartments to a mobile home—while his parents managed the financial pressure of raising a large family on a limited income.
The family’s longest stay in one place was about two years. Kevin attended two middle schools and two high schools, repeatedly leaving behind familiar neighborhoods, classmates and routines.
“I could never say, ‘This is my neighborhood,’” he said. “I don’t want my son to go through that.”
Building Stability for Lafayette
Kevin met Jennifer, his longtime partner, when he was a junior at Douglass High School and she was a sophomore. They have been together ever since and are determined to give Lafayette the stability Kevin rarely experienced as a child.
Kevin now works as a production supervisor at Nortek Air Solutions, leading about 30 employees. Jennifer, 23, is a stay-at-home mother. Kevin describes Lafayette as “smart, creative and genuinely funny” and says his son already loves learning.
After living with Jennifer’s mother for a year, the family rented a house she owned. They were grateful for the housing, Kevin said, but renting did not provide the permanence he wanted for his family.
“I never want my son to feel that anxiety — ‘Where are we moving next year?’” Kevin said. “I want him to be able to say, ‘This is my neighborhood. This is my home. This is ours.’”
Kevin said he would work “four jobs” before allowing his son to experience the housing insecurity he knew as a child. “I’m absolutely ecstatic about our new Habitat home,” he said. “I’ve always wanted my son to have the proper structure in place for his future.”
The Habitat Path to Homeownership
Through COHFH’s New Home Construction program, qualified future homeowners complete key steps before purchasing a new Habitat home at cost, with a mortgage and no down payment:
• Complete 100 hours of sweat equity.
• Participate in first-time homebuyer education.
• Purchase the home at cost through an affordable mortgage.
“Kevin and Jennifer are giving Lafayette the roots and stability Kevin always wanted as a child,” said COHFH Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland. “Their hard work, love for their son and commitment to building a strong future reflect what Habitat homeownership is all about. We are honored to welcome this remarkable young family to Cornerstone Creek.”
For Kevin, the dedication marks more than the end of a long search for stable housing. It represents the chance to create the kind of childhood memories that come from staying rooted in one place — walking through the same front door each day, knowing the neighbors and building a future around a home that belongs to the family.
The family’s new home in Cornerstone Creek is also part of a larger effort by Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity to make affordable homeownership accessible to working families. By combining homeowner education, sweat equity and an affordable mortgage model, the organization aims to help families build long-term financial stability along with a safe place to live.
As Lafayette grows, Kevin said he hopes the house will give his son something he once wished for himself: a steady place to learn, dream and call home.
