Repunte de Estafas en Oklahoma
Una cooperativa de crédito local recuerda a la comunidad que debe mantenerse alerta ante el aumento del fraude
Oklahoma City, OK — Gracias a la vigilancia del personal de la Cooperativa de Crédito Federal WEOKIE, un socio se salvó recientemente de perder $50,000 en una estafa financiera. El intento de pérdida se evitó cuando un empleado de la sucursal notó una actividad inusual y se tomó el tiempo de hacer preguntas cruciales antes de completar la transacción. El socio finalmente reveló que había sido presionado por estafadores que se hacían pasar por agentes del orden, exigiéndoles dinero para resolver "problemas legales" inventados. Se notificó de inmediato a las autoridades y se elaboró un informe.
Este no es un incidente aislado. Según la dirección de WEOKIE, el personal ha evitado varios intentos similares en los últimos meses. Ante el aumento de las estafas en el área metropolitana de Oklahoma City, WEOKIE anima a los consumidores a ser cautelosos y a verificar siempre las solicitudes financieras sospechosas. Estafas observadas actualmente en el área de OKC
El equipo de Riesgo y Cumplimiento de WEOKIE señala que las siguientes estafas se dirigen activamente a los residentes:
• Fraude de inversión en criptomonedas: Convencen a las víctimas de invertir en Bitcoin u otras criptomonedas, pero sin saberlo, envían fondos a cuentas controladas por estafadores.
• Suplantación de identidad de instituciones gubernamentales o financieras: Los estafadores se hacen pasar por agentes del IRS, fuerzas del orden o incluso empleados financieros, alegando que existen órdenes judiciales o actividad sospechosa. Se les indica a las víctimas que retiren efectivo para su "custodia" e incluso pueden recibir instrucciones sobre qué decirles a los cajeros para eludir las medidas de seguridad internas.
• Fraude electrónico/Cuentas embudo: Se engaña a las víctimas para que abran cuentas que utilizan los estafadores para transferir fondos ilícitos mediante cheques, ACH o transferencias bancarias.
• Estafas de robo de cuentas y reclutamiento: Los delincuentes reclutan a jóvenes adultos en línea para abrir cuentas. Utilizando credenciales robadas, los estafadores transfieren dinero a estas cuentas e instruyen a los reclutados para que retiren el efectivo inmediatamente. Estafas a personas mayores: Los estafadores siguen dirigiéndose desproporcionadamente a los adultos mayores, a menudo mediante llamadas infundadas en el miedo o llamadas "urgentes" solicitando dinero.

"Proteger a nuestros miembros es la base de todo lo que hacemos", afirmó Jeff Carpenter, presidente y director ejecutivo de WEOKIE Federal Credit Union. "Nuestro personal está capacitado para detectar señales de alerta, confiar en su intuición e intervenir cuando algo no parece correcto. Su vigilancia ya ha evitado que varios miembros pierdan cantidades de dinero que les cambiarían la vida, y queremos que todos los habitantes de Oklahoma sepan: si algo les parece sospechoso, relájense, pregunten y contacten a su institución financiera antes de actuar".

• Verificar cualquier comunicación inesperada de "agencias gubernamentales" o "instituciones financieras".
