Demócratas de Oklahoma Flip The Fifth

OKLAHOMA CITY – Después de grandes inversiones en la reconstrucción del partido y obtener el voto, el partido demócrata de Oklahoma celebra victoria de Kendra Horn en Congreso Distrito 5, un asiento que no ha sido representado por un demócrata desde la década de 1970. Senador James Lankford y gobernador Mary Fallin representaron el distrito previamente. Ella se convierte en la primera mujer demócrata a ser enviada a Washington, DC, desde Oklahoma y será una voz para proteger y ampliar la cobertura de atención médica y oportunidades educativas para los habitantes de Oklahoma. Oklahoma City.- After major investments in building the state’s party apparatus and turning out the vote, the Oklahoma Democratic Party celebrates Kendra Horn’s win in Congressional District 5, a seat that has not been represented by a Democrat since the 1970s. Senator James Lankford and Governor Mary Fallin represented the district previously. She becomes the first Democratic woman to be sent to Washington, DC, from Oklahoma and will be a voice to protect and expand health care coverage and educational opportunities for Oklahomans. She will join a Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives that will fight to expand economic opportunities and hold the president and his administration accountable.

In state politics, Kevin Stitt spent his campaign promising change but could not identify where he and Governor Fallin diverged in tackling Oklahoma’s problems. Those problems are profound: Republicans in Oklahoma City have overseen 8 years of disastrous governance. 

Until their hands were forced by tens of thousands of teachers organized to help their students earlier this year, Republican leaders slashed per-student education spending more than any other state since 2008. They resisted negotiating with these teachers every step of the way. Faced with more than a billion dollar budget shortfall, Republican leaders decided to raid our rainy-day fund and give a half billion tax break to oil and gas special interests. Meanwhile, Oklahoma became the incarceration capital of the world and its prisons are dangerously overcrowded. And rural hospitals in Sayre, Frederick, Eufaula and Wiburton have shut down as Republican leaders refuse to bring our tax dollars back to Oklahoma and expand Medicaid. 

Kevin Stitt gave no indication during the campaign that he would put Oklahoma on the right track, and the Oklahoma Democratic Party will hold him to account during these next four years. As he prepares to take the top executive office in the state, he has not answered basic questions about how we will ensure there are no conflicts of interest between his company and governing and that he cannot use the governor’s office to personally enrich himself and his business partners. 

The newly elected and reelected Democratic legislators campaigned on and are committed to governing on shared prosperity and targeted investments in our infrastructure. They will be an essential check on Kevin Stitt and his Republican allies to ensure our children and our communities aren’t shortchanged in favor of special interests.
