• Promover entornos escolares seguros e inclusivos

Galilea Martinez Announces Run to Represent District 7 on OKCPS Board

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Galilea Martinez, a 28-year-old Oklahoma City native and nonprofit professional, is running to represent District 7 on the Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education, aiming to bring new leadership to one of the city’s most diverse school districts.

Martinez and opponent Natalie Roman, 22, qualified during the December 2025 candidate filing period to appear on the ballot for the April 7, 2026 general election after the primary scheduled for February 10 was canceled due to the two candidates filing without additional opponents.

In an interview with El Latino American Newspaper, Martinez share her personal live and experience that brought her campaign to support students. She aims to represent stories similar to her own within the district. Her focus centers on fostering community and advocating for the needs of OKCPS students.

Martinez, who grew up in south Oklahoma City and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with degrees in nonprofit administration and political science, says her background gives her insight into the needs of District 7 families. She attended local public and charter schools and is bilingual in English and Spanish, reflecting the demographics of the majority-Hispanic district she hopes to represent.

Martinez emphasizes:

Advocating for student safety and inclusive learning environments

• Ensuring access to school resources for multilingual and low-income families

• Strengthening community trust in public education

She has framed her candidacy as a chance to give families “a voice in schools and across the city,” particularly amid ongoing discussions about statewide education policy and student support systems.

Before running for the school board, Martinez said she spent several years working in political campaigns and election-focused nonprofits, including Voto Latino, Run for Something, and the Future Caucus Network, where she engaged in outreach and civic engagement initiatives. She currently serves as the associate director of communications and events for the Partnership for Large Election Jurisdictions; a national organization focused on best practices for election administration.

District 7 covers parts of south Oklahoma City and includes several schools with diverse student populations, including Capitol Hill High School and Southeast High School, as well as their feeder middle and elementary schools. The seat opened up after Meg McElhaney — the incumbent board member — chose not to seek reelection.

The OKCPS school board race is nonpartisan. The general election in which Martinez and Roman will appear on the ballot is set for April 7, 2026, with results expected to shape local educational policy and representation for families and students in District 7.
