El proceso democrático es algo de lo que Estados Unidos se enorgullece y que requiere participación para prosperar. Aunque el proceso de aportación pública varía según el estado, existe una característica común: los legisladores necesitan escuchar directamente a sus electores sobre los asuntos que les importan.

¿Cómo puedes asegurarte de que tu voz sea escuchada?

Tanto si te interesa la política federal, estatal o local, puedes compartir tus opiniones con los representantes electos escribiendo, llamando o visitándoles. Testificar en persona también es una forma muy eficaz de compartir tus opiniones directamente. Otras opciones incluyen escribir una carta al director de tu periódico local o compartir información en redes sociales.

Sea cual sea la forma en que decidas interactuar con tus representantes, es importante que tengas una voz auténtica. Mantén tu mensaje simple, civilizado y enfocado. El representante o público al que te diriges necesita saber quién eres, por qué te importa el tema y qué acciones quieres que tome. En el caso de la legislación, esto significa instar al representante a votar sí o no en una propuesta específica.

Comentar sobre un problema también debe ser oportuno. Intenta hablar con representantes o publicar tu historia en los medios en un momento clave, como antes de una audiencia o un debate en pleno.

Ensure your voice is heard by lawmakers

Across the U.S., lawmakers are gathering in their state capitols and Washington, D.C. to begin another year of debating and passing legislation.

The democratic process is something America prides itself on and one that requires input to thrive. While the process for public contributions varies by state, one commonality exists—lawmakers need to hear directly from their constituents on issues that are important to them.

How can you make sure your voice is heard?  

Whether you’re interested in federal, state, or local policy, you can share your views with elected officials by writing, calling, or visiting them. Testifying in person is also a very effective way to share your views directly. Other options include writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or sharing information on social media.

However you choose to engage with your representatives, providing your authentic voice is important. Keep your message simple, civil, and focused. The representative or audience you address needs to know who you are, why the issue matters to you, and what action you want taken. In the case of legislation, this means urging the representative to vote yes or no on a specific proposal.

Commenting on an issue should also be timely. Try to speak to representatives or place your story in the media at a key moment, such as before a hearing or floor debate.
